The Georgia Southern Eagles represent Georgia Southern University in football as part of the Southern Conference.
In 1982 Erk Russell was hired to build the football program for Georgia Southern College. Under Russell the Eagles received distinction as the only 15-0 college team of the twentieth century, before his retirement following the end of the 1989 season. He would be replaced by Tim Stowers (1990-95), followed by Frank Ellwood (1996), Paul Johnson (1997-2001), Mike Sewak (2002-05), and finally Brian VanGorder (2006), who resigned his position on January 16, 2007. Chris Hatcher, formerly head coach at Valdosta State University, was name the new head coach shortly thereafter on January 19, 2007.
The Georgia Southern Eagles play an eleven-game conference schedule. The Eagles have won six NCAA I-AA National Championships. During Russell's tenure, the Eagles captured three I-AA National Titles in 1985, 1986, and 1989, and were National Runners-Up in 1988. Under Stowers, they won a fourth title in 1990. Johnson and the Eagles brought home two more championships in 1999 and 2000. The Eagles have won the Southern Conference championship in 1993, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004.
Georgia Southern home football games are played at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. Paulson Stadium was dedicated on September 29, 1984, and has a current capacity of 18,000.
