After a spell as sole host of Good Evening Ulster and following a series of outside broadcast roadshows he launched his talk/variety show Kelly September 1989. It was for this show, which attracted a number of leading guests to Belfast's Havelock House that Kelly was to become best remembered. The show ran until December 16 2005 when the final episode aired, featuring Brian Keenan and Eamonn Holmes as guests.

In 1998 Kelly was initiated into the Royal Television Society Hall of Fame for his contributions to broadcasting in Ireland.
