The story is about Sanjay Ramasamy (Surya), a rich businessman and his friend Kalpana (Asin). Kalpana, an advertisement model goes around telling her producer that she is the lover of Sanjay when she hasn't even met him and also gives an interview about this to a popular magazine. Sanjay comes to know about this and wants to settle scores with her but on the way he meets a girl(who is Kalpana) who helps handicapped children. He develops a love at first sight and eventually, he meets Kalpana. She is the same helpful girl he had seen and doesn't tell her that he is Sanjay. Kalpana would fall in love with him. While on a train to Mumbai, Kalpana saved a group of children from a group of dacoits. After a few days, the same dacoits come to Kalpana's house in order to murder her. Sanjay would arrive at the scene and fight some of the dacoits, but during the fight, she is murdered. The irony is that Kalpana never finds out that he is Sanjay. The dacoits hit Sanjay on the head severely with a metal rod. Sanjay survives the incident, but suffers a strange disease which is characterized by short term memory loss. At any time, he would not be able to remember anything that happened more than 15 minutes ago. He determines to revenge the dacoits who killed his love. The rest of the story is about how Sanjay goes about finding the dacoits in spite of his memory loss.

The title is said to be inspired by an invader of India named Ghajini who failed many times until he succeeded, much like the protagonist of the movie fails many times and then succeeds in achieving his goals. However, the name Ghajini is a misnomer as it was Mohammad of Ghori who tried to invade India 17 times, failing miserably on every occasion. Finally, on the 18th time, he was successful. Warrior Ghajini on the other hand had great successes in his invasions amassing great wealth.

This movie was highly influenced by Memento (2000) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209144/) but due credit was not given to the inspired film. Like most Indian movies that are inspired from the west, this movie too was infused with Indian touches such as songs, romance,Sentiment and action.

The movie had a 100% Opening {citation}. It managed to sustain the tremendous opening, and went on to be Surya's biggest hit at the time. It collected enough revenue to make it one of the three highest grossing tamil-language films of 2005 {citation}followed by anniyan.
