In 1972, Gil earned a Doctor of Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee before turning professional later that year. He is a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He became eligible to play on the Champions Tour in 1996, and has enjoyed considerably more success at that level than he did on the regular tour, with over 24 wins to his credit. Three of his wins have come in senior majors, namely The Tradition in 1997 and 1998 and the Senior Players Championship, also in 1998.
