Good Morning Australia started out breakfast television program broadcast by Ten News with the 6:00 to 9:00 timeslot. It debuted in March 1981 with Gordon Elliott and Sue Kellaway co-hosting. Kellaway departed shortly after the program began and was replaced by Kerri-Anne Kennerly, who stayed with the program until the end of 1991 when she was replaced by Sandra Sully, later Joy Smithers and then Sandra Sully again.
The male co-host position of GMA was filled by Tim Webster, Mike Gibson, Terry Willessee, Mike Hammond and Ron Wilson. The program was cancelled at the end of 1993.
In this era the programme was im competition with the identical in format Today from Channel Nine, which commenced 28 June 1982, starring Sue Kellaway, the initial female host of the Ten-show. She was to remain with Nine for about three years. The Today team with in the majority of years Liz Hayes as femle lead and co-hosts George Negus and Steve Liebmann respectively, generally prevailed in the ratings.
The chat show of Bert Newton - considered as one of the giants of Australian tv entertainment - began under the title The Morning Show and adopted the then vacant title GMA in 1993. The program was cancelled in 2005 and aired its final episode on 16 December as Newton moved to Channel Nine. 9am with David and Kim replaced GMA.

The advertorials were for products from home-shopping companies such as Danoz Direct and Global Shop Direct, and featured mostly the popular presenter, Moira McLean, in later years also Marianne van Dorslar.
