Google WiFi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Google WiFi is a service launched by Google on September 20, 2005. It currently serves only some locations in San Francisco and all of Mountain View, California [1]. Google is trying it out at a pizza parlor (Kapp's Pizza Bar and Grill in Mountain View, CA) and gym (Airborne Gymnastics in Santa Clara, California) next to the Google headquarters. As of July 1, 2006, beta deployment is available through out Mountain View.
Google uses Tropos mesh equipment mounted on utility poles. Despite Tropos support for industry 802.11i security standards, the Google deployment is essentially broadcasts of naked text. According to Muni Wireless this is the standard deployment for hundreds of metropolitan networks.
Google Secure Access is VPN software offered for download and use by Google. It is used to access Google WiFi service in Mountain View, California. As of 2005 September, it is in a development stage ("beta"). It was created by a Google employee in their "20% time", where employees can work on projects of their choosing.
