Gorleston-on-Sea is adjacent to the town of Great Yarmouth, in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated to the south and west side of the River Yare which separates it from Great Yarmouth.

Gorleston-on-Sea was historically part of the old County Borough of Great Yarmouth. County Boroughs were brought in as part of The Parliamentary Reform Act of 1832. Gorleston-on-Sea remained a village in the county of Suffolk, until boundary changes were brought in. And Gorleston-on-Sea was then moved into the County Norfolk in 1891. This changed again slightly with the Local Government Act 1972. Since April 1, 1974 it has formed part of the unparished urban area of Great Yarmouth, which is itself a portion of the larger current Borough of Great Yarmouth.

Gorleston-on-Sea's main claim to historical fame is as the centre of the herring fishing industry with sailing drifters. It was a major seaside resort in Edwardian times and retains much of this Edwardian charm in the beach area. The beach is one of the very best and regularly achieves Blue Flag status.

A major health facility located in Gorleston-on-Sea is the James Paget Hospital that provides a service for the whole area.
