Gulf of Haifa

The Gulf of Haifa (also called Haifa Bay) is a small bay along the Mediterranean coast of Northern Israel. Fed by the Kishon River, the cities of Haifa and Akko are on its shores. South of the bay rises beautiful Mount Carmel.
The Gulf of Haifa is Israel's only natural harbor on the Mediterranean. There is a man-made harbor in Ashdod and Israel has a natural harbor in the Red Sea in Eilat.
Port facilities were constructed in the 1930s under British auspices. Facilities have since been expanded by the Israeli government. The Gulf of Haifa is polluted due to shore-based oil refineries and chemical plants. The Kishon River is also quite polluted.
