From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gustav von Wangenheim (February 18, 1895August 5, 1975) was a German actor, screenwriter and director.

He was born Ingo Clemens Gustav Adolf Freiherr von Wangenheim to Eduard Clemens Freiherr von Wangenheim (also known as Eduard von Winterstein) and Minna Mengers in Wiesbaden. Both of his parents were actors.

Wangenheim entered films in 1916; among the most widely exhibited of his silent efforts was the 1922 vampire classic Nosferatu, in which the actor was cast as Thomas Hutter, the counterpart to Dracula's John Harker. In the same year he became a member of the Communist Party of Germany.

In the 1930's he left Nazi Germany and fled to the Soviet Union. While living in exile, he continued writing and producing movies (e.g. Kämpfer). After the war he returned to East Germany where he started to work for the DEFA as screenwriter and director.

He was married to Inge von Wangenheim, formerly Franke (July 1, 1912April 6, 1993). He died August 5, 1975 in East Berlin.
