HD DVD-R is the writable disc variant of HD DVD, and is available with a single-layer capacity of 15 GB or dual-layer capacity of 30 GB.[1] Currently, HD DVD-R has slower write speeds than the competing BD-R format (1–2x vs. 1–4x) and lower storage capacity.

Pricing of HD DVD devices and blank media is yet to be released, but it is expected that devices will be available at a lower price-point than the competing Blu-ray Disc format.

The Toshiba SD-L902A for notebooks is one of the first available writers, though it is not meant for retail.[2][3] It burns HD DVD (including Dual Layer) with a speed of 1x. It can also burn DVDs and CDs. One of the notebooks that will be equipped with this burner is the Toshiba Qosmio 40-11L.[4][5]

In a test of the SD-L902A by C't computer magazine with Verbatim discs, the written HD DVD-Rs suffered from high noise levels. [6] As a result, the written discs could not be recognized by the external HD DVD drive of the Xbox 360, though they could be read by the SD-L902A.[7]
