Hanover Zoo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hanover Zoo in Hanover, Germany, is a German zoo with a number of unique highlights, for example:

  • Sambezi: Visitors travel in small boats for about 6 minutes along an artificial African river with a trading post. The animals - giraffes, rhinoceros, turtles, birds and so on - are grazing on the banks or swimming in the water. One should not get out of the boat on to the river bank, since at this enclosure there are no barriers between the visitors and the animals.
  • Jungle Palace: Elephants and other animals live among Indian-style palace buildings. There are elephant shows several times a day. Two baby elephants were born here in 2003, another one in Autumn 2005.
  • Meyers Farm: Traditional German farm house with farm yard, farm animals, restaurant etc. Children can play with some of the animals.
  • Gorilla Mountain: Various apes live on a big hill. Again, by adroit use of water-filled trenches, there are no visible barriers between the visitors and the gorillas.

Future expansion plans include Yukon Bay (Alaska landscape with seals etc.).
