List of purported hate groups

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Numerous groups have been alleged to be hate groups, which are organized groups or movements that advocate hate, hostility or violence. Allegations of being a hate group are often controversial since the criteria are somewhat subjective. Groups which are pursuing legitimate grievances through legitimate means can easily be labelled "hate groups" by their opponents in an attempt to discredit and smear them.

This list is composed of groups that have been listed by hate group researchers. These hate group researchers are themselves controversial and have been accused, chiefly by their targets, of profiting by "fear-mongering" and of pursuing ethnic, religious, or anti-religious agendas.

Sources:

  • The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), one of the major sources of information on hate groups in the United States, is a Jewish organization that tracks various hate groups and extremist groups that have committed hate crimes. The ADL has also been known to cite many organizations critical of the state of Israel, such as Amnesty International, as anti-semitic, which is a qualification for hate group status.

Groups listed by the ADL are marked by (ADL).

  • Hatewatch, by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Monitors "the evolving problem of online bigotry", and define bigotry as the "[advocacy of] violence against or unreasonable hostility toward those persons or organizations identified by their race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender or disability. Also including organizations or individuals that disseminate historically inaccurate information... for the purpose of vilification." Groups listed by the SPLC are marked by (Hatewatch). [1]

The inclusion or absence of a particular group on this list does not mean that it fits the description of a hate group, only that it has been purported to.
