Hattfjelldal is a municipality in the county of Nordland, Norway.

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Hattfjelldalen ("Hatfieldalen" 1723), since the first church was built there (in 1790). The first element is the name of the mountain Hattfjellet, the last element is dal m 'valley, dale'. The meaning of the name Hattfjellet is 'the hat mountain' (because its shaped like a hat).

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1986). The line represent the profile of the mountain Hattfjellet.

The lake Røssvatnet (Reevhtse in Sami) is a lake and reservoir lying partially in Hattfjelldal; it has been the site of human occupation since the Stone Age. Its area of 219 km² makes it the second largest lake in Norway by surface area.
