Hawthorn East, is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, in the state of Victoria. It is approximately 9 km east of the Melbourne CBD. The suburb is roughly bounded by Barkers Road to the north, Burke Road to the east, Toorak Road and the Monash Freeway to the south, and Auburn Road to the west.

Hawthorn East was originally established in the 1880s and many of the historical buildings and houses are still well preserved. It is located in the Local Government Area of the City of Boroondara, and is between two shopping strips located on Glenferrie Road and Burke Road.[3]

Hawthorn East is also home to several parks and gardens, many dating from the late 1890s, including:

  • Anderson Park (which has two ovals and a tennis club)
  • Cato Park
  • Central Gardens (also known as Rocket Park, situated on the western edge of Hawthorn East)
  • Fritsch Holzer Park ( Which has a tennis court )
  • Rathmines Road Reserve
  • Symonds Street Reserve
  • Victoria Park

Hawthorn East has a large selection of government and private schools. None of the schools are zoned and children from any neighbourhood may attend. Primary and secondary schools within Hawthorn East include; Alia College, Auburn Primary School, Auburn South Primary School and Hawthorn Secondary College. The suburb is within a 4km radius of some of the most exclusive private schools in Melbourne, including: Bialik College (Jewish), Methodist Ladies' College, Carey Baptist Grammar School, Scotch College, Ethiraj College for Women, Camberwell Grammar School, Camberwell Girls Grammar School, Ruyton Girls' School, Lord Murugan Hindu College, Trinity College, Fintona Girls' School and Strathcona Baptist Girls' Grammar School. Swinburne University of Technology is located very close in the next suburb of Hawthorn, many other universities can be accessed via public transport, with journey times of around 12-15 minutes into the CBD.
