Hazel, is a live-in maid in the home of corporate lawyer George Baxter, his wife Dorothy, their son Harold, and the family dog Smiley. The series dramatizes Hazel's day-to-day life looking after the Baxter family and keeping the household running.

At the beginning of the 1965-1966 season, when the show moved from NBC to CBS, DeFore and Blake were dropped from the show. To keep the show going, the storyline had George transferred to the Middle East by his job, causing he and Dorothy to have to move. Hazel went to work for George's younger brother, Steve, Steve's wife Barbara, and their daughter Suzie. George and Dorothy's son Harold remained in the States and also moved in with his Uncle Steve.
