Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva, usually known as Fred (born 18 August 1979), is a football (soccer) player from Brazil. He currently plays for DC United after signing from Melbourne Victory in the A-League in 2007, as well as playing at previous Brazilian clubs América-MG, Guarani and Tupi FC.

In Round 2 of the 2006/07 A-League season, Fred elbowed Sydney FC defender Mark Milligan in the throat, and received a 3 match ban, despite an appeal by Melbourne Victory on the basis that Fox Sports replays, in their view, showed no actual contact had been made to Milligan's throat. On his return match - October 1, 2006, he scored the opening goal against Queensland Roar at the 11th minute in their top of the table clash.

His displays throughout the 2006-07 season was praised throughout the Australian footballing community. His popularity increased when he appeared in a television commercial promoting underwear. He was voted best A-League player for season 2 by the The World Game Team. In the 2007 A-League Grand Final, Fred had 4 assists on the hat trick (5 goals) scored by Archie Thompson.

The latest news (as of 10th March 2007) is that Fred will be not re-signing with Melbourne Victory, but will sign with Major League Soccer club D.C. United[1][2]. It is thought to be a matter of money, as United has reportedly offered $180,000 USD per year and the Melbourne Victory can not match the offer due to the more stringent salary cap in the A-League.
