Helmsman

A helmsman relies upon visual references, a magnetic and gyrocompass, and a rudder angle indicator to steer a steady course as directed by the mate or other officer on the bridge. The bridge of the freighter shown here has two steering stands. This redundancy is a safety measure in case one of the steering mechanisms that controls the ship's rudder fails.

A helmsman is a person who steers a ship. In the merchant marine this is usually an able seaman. In the Navy it is a seaman or a quartermaster. Mao Zedong is commonly known as the "Great Helmsman".
