Hereward FM is the Independent Local Radio station for Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. Launched July 10, 1980, Hereward Radio 225 was the first local service in the area, with the station's studio originally based in the back of a former pub in Bridge Street, Peterborough, before relocating to the Queensgate Shopping Centre in the city in 1987.

Hereward Radio, "the station you can really call your own", began on 95.7MHz and 225 metres/1332kHz. Reorganisation of the FM broadcast band moved the station to 102.7 since around 1987/1988, with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire using the former frequency for the Peterborough area.

The radio station is owned by GCap Media, having been previously bought by the GWR Group in 1995 from its original management, Mid-Anglia Radio plc.

Notable personalities from the past include the current GCAP CEO Ralph Bernard, the original News Editor of Hereward Radio.

Separate programmes are provided on the old AM frequency of 1332kHz, under the name of Gold. All programming, on the Classic Gold Digital Network, is shared apart from the weekday early afternoon show. Hereward split its AM and FM frequencies in April 1992, and called its 1332kHz AM service 'WGMS - The World's Greatest Music Station'.

Hereward FM broadcasts "More Music Variety" including pop and rock from the 1980s, through to today's hits.

In October 2004, the 153 metre Morbourne mast near Peterborough collapsed after a fire in suspicious circumstances, taking Hereward's DAB service off air, along with the national and local BBC services. A new mast has been erected.

Hereward's main FM transmitting antenna array is at the top of the Gunthorpe mast. The station has an effective radiated power of 4kW, and in good conditions can be heard as far as Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.
