Hill 47
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hill 47, located on the eastern side of North Berwick is home to a small shelter where locals often gather during the summer months to consume cider or beer. In winter months this shelter often provdes local youths with the sanctuary of warmth which enables them to smoke cigarettes (tabs as they are known to some locals) or when supplies are available, cannabis or more accurately cannabis resin. The shelter provides panoramic views across the Firth of Forth, and it is perhaps for this reason that the site has become popular with the town youngsters.
The shelter itself is made of red brick which was originally mined from the back of the small volcanic plug which can be found at the south side of the town, commonly known as Berwick Law. The shelter was erected in 1979 when it was thought that it could provide the elderly with a place of rest when walking along the Red Path on summer or winter days.
