Hinton Mitchem

Senator Hinton Mitchem is serving his eighth term in the Alabama Senate after serving one term in the Alabama House of Representatives. Senator Mitchem was elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate on January, 9 2007 by a margin of 18-17 over the efforts of a coalition of Republicans and disaffected Democrats to elect leadership that would be more favorable to Gov. Riley.

Senator Mitchem is one of the longest-serving members of the Alabama Legislature, re-elected to his ninth consecutive term on November 7, 2006. Mitchem currently serves as Chairman of the Alabama Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness. On March 20, 2007 Senator Mitchem voted to give himself and the rest of the Alabama Legislature at 62% pay raise by overriding the Governor's veto against the wishes of his Senate District.

Born in Oconee County, Georgia on May 18, 1938, he is the owner of Hinton Mitchem Tractor Co., Inc. He received his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Education from the University of Georgia. Senator Mitchem is the father of three children: Todd, Tonya, and Derrick. He is a Democrat, a Presbyterian, and a Rotarian. He enjoys golf and traveling in his spare time.
