The seat was created in 1983 as a successor to the Holborn and St. Pancras South which had been in existence since 1950.

Following their review of parliamentary representation in North London the Boundary Commission for England has recommended the creation of a modified Holborn constituency, made from the following electoral wards in the London Borough of Camden:

Compared to the previous boundaries, this sees the addition of Gospel Oak and Highgate from the Hampstead and Highgate constituency. (Gospel Oak had previously been part of the constituency, but had been moved to Hampstead and Highgate at the last review.) The electorate of the new seat would've been 85,188 if had existed at the 2005 General Election the figure has since risen further and at the next election it is likely to have one of the highest electorates in London.

The seat has been held since 1983 by Frank Dobson for Labour, who had been elected in 1979 to the predecessor seat of Holborn & St. Pancras South. Frank Dobson is now the longest serving Labour MP in London.

Jo Shaw has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the the UK general election in 2009 or 2010.
