With the area initially being occupied by workers in Oldham's cotton mills, much of Hollinwood's more recent growth potential was due to the Ferranti factory which produced transformers in its heyday. Later the factory produced container lifting trucks as the building had the height to do so.

Hollinwood was home to the Roxy Cinema which was popular for both the local and wider community. However, the cinema closed in 2005 after years of falling attendance. Roxy Cinema was demolished between February and March of 2007.

Hollinwood is within the 5% most economically deprived wards in the United Kingdom.[4]

The Hollinwood Branch Canal passes through the district.

The area is served by the Hollinwood railway station, along the Manchester to Rochdale via Oldham Line.

Hollinwood was changed substantially by the construction of the M60 motorway which takes the southern route around the city of Manchester and was completed in 2000. More construction is occurring recently with the building of the Byron Apartment Block and the planned building of several private 2/3/4 bedroom houses in the area.
