Honorary Canadian citizenship
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Honorary Canadian citizenship is an honour bestowed by the Parliament of Canada to foreigners of exceptional merit. It is a symbolic honour and does not give the recipient any rights, privileges or duties typically held by a Canadian citizen.
The honour requires the unanimous approval of parliament. As of 2007, three people have had this honour bestowed upon them.
- Raoul Wallenberg, Swedish diplomat and Holocaust hero, 1985 (posthumously awarded).
- Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid activist and former president of South Africa, 2001.[1]
- Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, 2006. [2]
