Hound
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A hound is a type of dog that assists hunters by tracking or chasing the animal being hunted. Its abilities can be contrasted with gun dogs, which assist hunters by identifying the location of prey or retrievers which recover shot quarry.
There are three types of hound, with several breeds belonging to each type:
| Type | Example | |
|---|---|---|
| Sighthounds, which follow prey predominantly by speed, keeping it in sight. This type of dog is very fast and will catch and kill game (hare, gazelle, deer) by itself. | Whippet | |
| Scent hounds, which follow prey by tracking its scent. This type of dog has endurance, but they are not fast runners. | Basset Hound | |
| The 'other' Hounds follow prey by sight and scent. These breeds are difficult to classify, and few fall into the sighthound or scenthound groups. | Rhodesian Ridgeback. | |
