Nandini is the daughter of Pandit Darbar, renowned proponent of Indian classical music, living in the Rann of Kutch. Nandini has been brought up with more freedom and education than her siblings, as she is the most beloved of Pandit Darbar.
Into the family comes Sameer (Salman Khan), a boy of Indo-Italian parentage. He is a music student and wants to grasp the essence of Hindustani music under the guidance of Pandit Darbar. He is a playful person and during the course of his stay Nandini and Sameer fall in love with each other.
When their love is discovered, Sameer is banished from the household. Sameer writes to Nandini, but his letters don't reach her in time. Meanwhile, Nandini's parents have arranged to get her married. Nandini goes through the marriage with Vanraj. He is deeply in love with her and all he asks is that they maintain the charade of a happy couple for the sake of his family. They live in this deceit briefly, until Sameer's letters reach Nandini and Vanraj discovers them. He then shows his true love and wisdom by taking Nandini to Italy to search for Sameer.
Nandini and Vanraj search for Sameer but always come up against a dead end. During their search, they come across an obstacle, where they are being robbed and Nandini shot by one of the thiefs. She gets hospitalized, and Vanraj selflessly devotes himself to caring for Nandini during her stay in hospital. After her discharge from the hospital, they get news about Sameer (through his mom), and decide to meet, on the night of his debut concert. When Nandini and Sameer do meet, the now-mature Nandini has realized Vanraj's great love for her. She leaves broken-hearted Sameer and goes back to Vanraj since she realized that she should be with the one who loves her more.

- In the wedding scene, Sameer says that Aishwarya Rai's character, Nandini, acts as if she is Miss World. Aishwarya Rai, actually was Miss World in 1994.
- Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ismail Darbar spent two years on the music of the film.
- While the director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was looking for a new film concept, around that time, a Gujarati fan of his named Pratap Karwat began to pester him on the phone about a new concept that Sanjay would come to like. Sanjay kept fobbing him off, until the man into a rage and forced him to listen to it. Bhansali loved it enough to meet him the very next day.
- Bhansali and the art director, Nitin Desai toured to many parts of Gujarat including Bhuj and Kutch to get perfect locales and research the lifestyle and the culture extensively. Desai later claimed that he received a letter from a film making team in Canada asking which part of the country the location was in.
- The bridge that was depicted in the movie was in Budapest, Hungary. But, Bhansali thought that such names could not be used to connect to the masses, so Hungarian scenes were shown as Italian in this film.
- This movie also resulted in the real-life romance between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai.
- This movie has striking similarities with the Bengali novelette N Honnyote (English: It Does Not Die) by Maitreyi Devi. However Mr Bhansali has not mentioned this anywhere in his film or in interviews. Whether this is pure coincidence or not is a matter of debate. The other protagonist in the book is Mircea Eliade, noted Romanian philosopher who wrote his version first titled La Nuit Bengali or Bengal Nights
[Scenes such as Salman Khan chewing on the chillies are also exactly similar to the book]
