Hurley International

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hurley International is a clothing company located in Costa Mesa, California founded by Bob Hurley. The company puts emphasis on skateboarding, surfing, music, and fun. The biggest factor in the brand's growth to popularity was the fact that popular pop-punk bands, especially blink-182 (in their prime), would frequently sport Hurley clothing.

Hurley International was sold to Nike, Inc. in 2002 for an undisclosed amount.

Hurley was founded in the late 1970s by Bob Hurley as Hurley Surfboards at 23 years old after working for 5 years as a surf board shaper for various companies. While becoming known as one of the premiere shapers in Southern California, Hurley licensed the U.S. rights to the up-and-coming Australian surf brand Billabong (clothing), and formed Billabong USA in 1982. In 1998 the U.S. licensing rights for Billabong expired after the Company had grown to over $70MM in sales in America, and the Australian parent company did not extend Hurley's agreement, so in 1998 Hurley International was born.

On March 2, 2002, the Company was sold to Nike, Inc., and after many outcries from the surfing community for brand independence, the brand still maintains autonomy to this day from its Nike parent.
