Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric dam

The 119 m Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric dam, located on the Yenisey river within 30 km upstream from Krasnoyarsk in Divnogorsk town, was finished in 1964 and supplies 6000 MW of power. Mostly it used to supply the KrAZ (Krasnoyarsky Aluminievyy Zavod, Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Plant). Both power and aluminium plants are controlling by RUSAL company
As a result of the damming, the Krasnoyarskoye reservoir appeared. This reservoir, also known as Krasnoyarskoye More (Krasnoyarsk sea), has 2000 km² area, 73,3 km³ volume, 388 km length, 15 km width in the widest place, 36.6 m average depth and 105 m depth near the dam.
Construction of the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric dam greatly impacted the local climate. Before the dam was built, the Yenisey in that area was free from ice for around 196 days per year; now it remains free from ice for the whole year round up to 300 to 400 km downstream. The huge amount of water stored in Krasnoyarskoye reservoir makes the local climate more warm and humid.
The dam is equipped with a ship elevator to allow passage of ships. Held to be a landmark symbol of Krasnoyarsk, it is depicted on the 10-rouble bill.
