2006 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2006 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating is a series of international invitational competitions in the first half of the figure skating season. Skaters compete in four disciplines (men's singles, ladies singles, pairs, and ice dance) over six events. Skaters earn a certain amount of points per placement. The top six scoring skaters or teams at the end of the series compete in the Grand Prix Final, which will be held in St. Petersburg. The Grand Prix series sets the stage for the European Figure Skating Championships, the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, the World Junior Figure Skating Championships, and the World Figure Skating Championships, as well as each country's national championships. The Grand Prix series began on 26 October 2006 and will last until 17 December 2006.
The Grand Prix is organised by the International Skating Union, who also run world cups and championships in short track speed skating and speed skating. Skaters compete for prize money and for a chance to compete in the Grand Prix Final. The top six skaters/teams from the previous year's World Championships are seeded and are guaranteed two events, determinded by draw. Skaters/teams who placed 7-12th are also given two events, though they are not considered seeded. Skaters/teams who medalled at the previous year's Junior Grand Prix Final and World Junior Figure Skating Championships are guaranteed one event. Furthermore, no more than three skaters/teams from the host country may compete in each discipline.

*Non-Scoring Event
After the final event, the NHK Trophy, the six skaters/teams with the most points advance to the Grand Prix Final. The point system is as follows:
| Placement | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st Place | 15 Points |
| 2nd Place | 13 Points |
| 3rd Place | 11 Points |
| 4th Place | 9 Points |
| 5th Place | 7 Points |
| 6th Place | 5 Points |
| 7th Place | 4 Points |
| 8th Place | 3 Points |
If a pairs team has competed in more than two events, the teams who scored below them in their non-scoring competition do not automatically move up in gaining points. For example, if Team A placed second below Team B, and it was Team B's non-scoring event, Team A still earns 13 points, not 15.
Skaters must compete in two events to qualify for the Final.
