I Can't Stop Loving You

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"I Can't Stop Loving You" was an international smash for legendary musician Ray Charles in 1962. Released from Charles' groundbreaking Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music album, the song (a cover version) reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as the U.S. R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. The song appeared on the soundtrack of the movie Metropolis where it was used instead of sound effects in the film's final scene.

The Van Halen song "Can't Stop Lovin' You" from their Balance album pays homage to this song.

The words and music to "I Can't Stop Loving You" were written and composed by country singer, songwriter and musician Don Gibson, who first recorded this song on December 30, 1957, for RCA Victor.

Charles' version ranked #161 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and #49 on CMT's 100 Greatest Songs in Country Music. Martina McBride performed the song in Charles's style at a Grand Ole Opry tribute to him that originally aired on Great American Country TV on June 3, 2006.

Widespread Panic, the famed band from Athens, Georgia, rang in the year 2007 by covering the song at their annual New Year's Celebration in Atlanta.
