Roberts is a 1987 graduate of Grinnell College.

Since his days at Grinnell College, Roberts has been a follower of the practices for improv comedy developed by Del Close.

Roberts was one of the founding members of the theatre troupe the Upright Citizens Brigade and its affiliated Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

Roberts has starred in the limited release film Martin & Orloff, and appeared in films such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Bring It On, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

The Upright Citizens Brigade was featured in its own sketch comedy series on Comedy Central. Most often seen as the UCB Agent Antoine, but portraying several regular characters such as Steve Youngblood and Astronaut Mike Birchwood. A running joke on his UCB character is that the other members believe him to be a cyborg, despite his constant assertions to the contrary.

Ian also appeared sporadically on episodes of the Late Night with Conan O'Brien in the mid-90s.

Roberts also was a recurring character in the cult sitcom Arrested Development, Dr. Wordsmith.
