Illinois Central College is a large junior college located in northern East Peoria, Illinois. It features artist galleries as a part of the Performing Arts Center, which exhibit new works by students and nationally known artists every 3 weeks.
The college is home to a branch of the University of Illinois at Springfield, and it operates a two-building satellite campus for the health sciences and other programs in downtown Peoria, Illinois. It recently annexed and revamped the now-closed George A. Zeller Mental Health Center in a then-controversial move and uses it as a north Peoria campus. The Illinois Central College Educational Foundation recently built a complex of student apartments (Woodview Commons) in 2004, making it the second community college in Illinois to have on-campus housing. It operates a greenhouse and a large fitness center named after an award-winning women's volleyball coach, Lorene Ramsey. It has a TV presence in the Peoria area. It is likely the largest two-year college in central Illinois. ICC's president, Dr. John Erwin, along with two other Peoria-area college presidents, is a driving force behind a proposed ring road to connect Peoria with growing nearby suburban outlying areas.
