Independence Park is a stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. It is primarily used for football, and is the home field of the Jamaica Football Federation. The stadium is considered the apex of Athletic competition in the West Indies. The stadium is home to Jamaica's national athletic team for the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games. The stadium opened in 1962 and held 40,000 people. Stadium facilities include two 400m IAAF regulation running tracks (a warm up track facility east of the main stadium was recently renovated, therefore providing two world class competition tracks), a concrete velodrome measuring 500m which encircles the running track, FIFA regulation football pitch, media center, 11 private suites and a royal box. In 1966, The stadium acted as the Main Stadium of the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games; hosting the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field events as well as cycling events. The most recent international event held at the stadium was the 2002 World Junior Championships in Athletics. Independence Park also features Olympic Size Swimming and Diving Pools across from the grandstand where aquatic events took place at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.It currently seats 8,500. The National Arena and National Indoor Arena are also located on site. With capacities of 3,000 and 6,000 respectively, the are the two largest indoor arenas in the Caribbean. The National Arena was built in 1963 for Weightlifting and Wrestling events at the BE&CG 1966. The National Indoor Arena built adjacent to The National Arena in 2002 for the 2003 IFNA Netball World Championships.
