From June 1980 until June 1990, WPIX in New York City produced and syndicated Independent Network News (INN), a national newscast for independent stations. The program featured the same talent that worked on WPIX's local newscasts. WPIX transmitted the national show's live feed weeknights at 9:30 p.m. (Eastern). It was produced and shown on the Tribune Broadcasting independent stations - WPIX, Chicago's WGN, Superstation WGN (sharing the WGN name at that time), and Denver's KWGN.
As part of a midday expansion of INN starting in 1981, channel 11 also experimented with a newscast at 12:30 p.m. co-anchored by Marvin Scott. During the decade, WPIX also offered INN affiliates "The Wall Street Journal Report," a business-oriented show (still on the air today); and From the Editor's Desk, a Sunday newsmaker show hosted by Richard D. Heffner.
In 1986, the national INN newscast, which was contained within the 10:00 show, was renamed USA Tonight, while the 7:30 program retained the title Independent News.
INN was eventually cancelled in 1990 with the advent of the Fox Television Network. Tribune Broadcasting retained some of staff to cover Washington D.C. for the Tribune stations and affiliating their stations with CNN for national and world news, and adding the time periods to their local newscasts.
The current Independent News Network is based out of KLJB (Fox 18) in Davenport, Iowa. It was launched in 1999 and produces nightly newscasts for a handful of English- and Spanish-language television stations, in addition to the America One television network.
On January 1, 2000, INN started its first FOX affiliated Newscast for Davenport, KLJB: FOX 18 Nine o'clock News.
In April of 2001, INN started to air its first affiliate newscast, which was an outsource of US and World news, and airs daily, in select cities across the US, today. In June 2002, "The American Times" and "INN News" were added as a syndicated generic national news product, designed for independent stations and cable networks who couldn't afford a customized news product.
Also in 2002, Big Sky News was launched to meet the challenge of providing local news for five television stations in western Montana under common ownership and master control facilities. Crafted to be "one newscast" Big Sky News desired their product be localized five ways while incorporating the power of regional coverage.
February 2003 The Univision affiliate in Salt Lake City was added as our first Spanish newscast. This provides INN with the opportunity to meet the demands of the rapidly growing Spanish market. Soon after, Amarillo, Texas would be added.
Then, in June 2004, INN brought in a Spanish newscast, Noticias Arkansas. A regional and local Spanish newscast for the NW Arkansas region. In 2005, INN started to produce for WNCF, a newscast called Ten@Ten, for Montgomery, Alabama.
In 2006, INN added Newscenter 9, for WVHF-CA, a station serving the Indiana portion of the Louisville, Kentucky market, it is usually a 10-15 minute newscast online, and uses INN anchors, and local reporters for the newscast.
On KTGF-TV in Great Falls,Montana until 2003 INN Produced a newscast called Big Sky News.
Also in 2006, INN a National Spanish language Network LAT TV in Houston, Texas is added. Latin America Broadcasting serves O & O stations in Texas and Arizona and other affiliates across the country.
