The starting point for Indo-Bangladeshi relations is the fact that Bangladesh was once part of one of India's largest and most important provinces called Bengal. During the partition of India in 1947, Bengal was divided into two territories: East Bengal (present-day Bangladesh) and West Bengal. East Bengal joined Pakistan because of its Muslim majority (then more than 85%[citation needed]). Relations between India and Pakistan have been fraught with animosity and three wars were fought between them. The third in this deadly series was the Bangladesh Liberation War in which Prime Minister Indira Gandhi intervened forcefully on Bangladesh's behalf thus cementing strong ties with the new nation for the years to come. Thus official diplomatic relations date from 1971. Since then relations have soured somewhat and now remain in a mixed state.
