Infante Alfonso of Spain

Infante Alfonso of Spain (Alfonso Cristino Teresa Angelo Francisco de Asis y Todos los Santos) (Rome, 3 October 1941–Estoril, 29 March 1956) was the youngest son of H.R.H. Don Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona and H.R.H. Doña Maria Mercedes de Borbón Dos-Sicilias y Orleans, and younger brother of current reigning King Juan Carlos of Spain, of Infanta Pilar of Spain and of Infanta Margarita of Spain.

Born in exile, he accompanied his brother when he went to study in Spain in 1948.
In 1956, while on summer vacation in Estoril, Portugal, Don Alfonso died in a shooting accident which also involved his brother Juan Carlos. The accident with a .22 and a target happened when the boys were waiting for dinner after returning home from Mass. There are several interpretations of what happened, one being that he jokingly pointed it at his brother, and not knowing it was loaded, pulled the trigger. This event occurred in the family residence in Estoril, Portugal. Within 48 hours of the accident Juan Carlos was back at the military academy. He was deeply affected by this incident and took some time before he returned back to his normal self.
Funeral mass was said by the Apostolic Nuncio to Portugal. He was buried in Portugal until the monarchy was restored in Spain, when he was buried in the Royal Crypt of the monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial, near Madrid.
