International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID) is an international organization that was created to promote universal access to all recorded knowledge.

FID was established on 12th September, 1895, in Brussels, as the International Institute of Bibliography (originally Institut International de Bibliographie, IIB) by two Belgian lawyers, Paul Otlet (1868-1944) and Henri La Fontaine (1854-1943).It was popularly known as the Brussels Institute. Its headquarters was changed to The Hague after 1934. It has gone through a number of changes in name that reflect changes of conceptualisation both of the field in which it operates.

The changes in names and years are :

  • 1931 - The International Institute for Documentation (Institut International de Documentation, IID)
  • 1937 - The International Federation for Documentation (Federation Internationale de Documentation, FID)
  • 1988 - The International Federation for Information and Documentation (Fédération Internationale d'Information et de Documentation, FID)

FID was dissolved in 2002.

One of the major contributions of FID is Universal Decimal Classification (UDC or the Brussels Expansion of Dewey). Although various parts of the Classification were issued from 1896, the first complete edition of the UDC was brought out in a huge volume of over 2000 pages, in the period 1904 to 1907. The UDC is widely adopted, especially in technical libraries. It is the first classification scheme to be based primarily on facets.

FID have over 600 publications mostly in a numbered series: IIB / IID / FID Publications

The Bulletin of the International Institute of Bibliography was issued from 1895. It appeared steadily until 1911, and, after a hiatus ,again in 1914. In late 1930's, it was re-titled as Revue de la Documentation/Review of Documentation.

FID Journal, International Forum for Information and Documentation and its Russian edition was published by VINITI, Moscow.

FID News Bulletin and International Forum on Information and Documentation were combined to be renamed as FID Review from 1999.

A much more comprehensive list of FID publications by Prof. Michael Buckland can be seen here.
