The Muslims in Serbia are mostly ethnic Bosniaks and Albanians, but also members of the smaller ethnic groups like Muslims by nationality, Gorani, Roma, Ashkali, Egyptians, Turks, etc.

Year 1594 is also one year which will remain for ever engraved in Serbian national conscience: it is in effect the year when the Turkish pasha orders to transport the relics of Saint-Sava in Belgrade and to burn them in public. By burning the relics of Saint-Sava, particularly respected saint, the Turkish occupier wants to break Serbian national conscience and especially to hit by the big way Orthodoxy, thinking that it would push the Serbians to acknowledge Turkish potency and to become a convert as a whole to Islam.


According to the 2002 census, there are 239,658 Muslims in Serbia (including Central Serbia and Vojvodina). Most of the Slavic Muslims (Bosniaks and Muslims by nationality) are concentrated in the region of Sandžak. The Albanian Muslims live mostly in Kosovo, but also in Central Serbia's municipalities of Preševo (Albanian: Preshevë), and Bujanovac (Albanian: Bujanoc), as well as in the part of the municipality of Medveđa. Gorani, Muslim Roma, Ashkali, Egyptians, and Turks live mostly in Kosovo. Most of the few thousand Arabs who live in Serbia are followers of Islam. The Arabs mostly living in Belgrade.

Islamic believers in Serbia are organized into two communities:

  • Islamic community of Serbia (Islamska zajednica Srbije), with seat in Belgrade, administered by reis-ul-ulema Hamdija Jusufspahić.
  • Islamic community in Serbia (Islamska zajednica u Srbiji), with seat in Novi Pazar, administered by mufti Adem Zilkić, which include:
    • Islamic community of Sandžak (Islamska zajednica Sandžaka), with seat in Novi Pazar, administered by mufti Adem Zilkić.
    • self-styled Islamic community of Sandžak (Islamska zajednica Sandžaka), with seat in Novi Pazar, administered by mufti Muamer Zukorlić.
    • Islamic community of Vojvodina (Islamska zajednica Vojvodine), with seat in Novi Sad, administered by mufti Fadil Murati.
    • Islamic community of Preševo Valley (Islamska zajednica Preševske Doline), with seat in Preševo.
    • Islamic community of Central Serbia (Islamska zajednica Centralne Srbije), with seat in Belgrade.
