Jabbin is a free chat program for instant messaging and Voice over IP phone calls via Jabber protocols.

Besides features of ordinary Messengers it supports end-to-end-encryption following the OpenPGP standard, it is platform independent available and enables users to make free phone calls.

For Microsoft Windows there is also an official portable version.

The program is based on the source code of the Psi Jabber client. Therefore, it is written in C++ and uses Qt library to provide its GUI. This library makes both applications platform-independent.

These two instant messenger tools use Jabber and XMPP communication protocols, however Jabbin additionally uses Jingle (protocol) library for peer-to-peer VoIP connections, using the Jingle support from Psi (where it was still considered experimental) with additional Windows support. The free voice codec Speex is used.

The first version (1.0) was published in December 2005. It was based on the development version 0.10 of Psi. The telephone connections are made via Transport for Initiating and Negotiating Sessions (TINS).

Since version 2.0 Jingle support was backported from Psi and extended to work on Windows. As such, Jingle is now used instead of TINS.

For version 3 it is planned to support videophone calls.
