Jacksonville City Nights is Ryan Adams' seventh official album. Like its predecessor Cold Roses, it is attributed to Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. The album is the second in a trilogy of albums released in a seven-month timespan. The album was released on September 27, 2005 in the United States and September 26, 2005 in the rest of the world. The album was recorded live in the studio, without overdubs. The title is most likely a reference to Adams' hometown of Jacksonville, North Carolina which has been referenced throughout his career, both solo and while involved in bands. Adams' current band also shares the name of the mascot of Jacksonville (N.C.) High School, which Adams attended.
Several limited American releases contained a DVD entitled September, which featured a 20 minute documentary about the band on the road and in the studio. Bonus tracks were issued to the many non-US countries. In the United Kingdom, the album was released with Jeane and Always on My Mind, the song first recorded by Brenda Lee, made famous by Elvis Presley and then covered again by Willie Nelson. The rest of Europe got Always On My Mind and Japan got Jeane, Always On My Mind and What Sin Replaces Love (Demonstration Recording). The vinyl version of this record included A Kiss Before I Go (Demonstration Recording), Jeane, Always on My Mind and I Still Miss Someone, a Johnny Cash cover.
