He was a monk at St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury before being selected as abbot of that monastic house.[1]
He was elected and consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury in 765.[2]
His term saw a dispute between the see of Canterbury and King Offa of Mercia leading to the creation of the rival Archdiocese of Lichfield in 787 under Higbert. Another source of conflict was Canterbury's mint, where the archbishop minted his own coins.[3] Jaenbert did not oppose the ratification of the elevation of Higbert by Pope Hadrian I.[4] But, Pope Leo III reversed the decision in the time of Æthelhard, Jaenbert's successor, on the theory that the English episcopate's unanimity in support of the elevation of Lichfield was misrepresented to Hadrian.[5]
Jaenbert died in 792, possibly on 12 May[2] or perhaps on August 12.[1] After his death, Offa at a council held at Clofesho and granted some privileges to the Kentish churches.[3] Jaenbert was buried in the abbey church in Canterbury.[1] Jaenbert has since been revered as a saint with a feast day of 12 August.[6]
