Jaime Yzaga

Jaime Yzaga (born October 23, 1967 in Lima, Peru) is a former professional tennis player from Peru.

Yzaga played on the professional tour from 1984 to 1996. He reached career-high rankings of World No. 18 in singles and World No. 54 in doubles (both in 1989). He was a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open in 1991, and at the US Open in 1994, reaching the final eight by defeating a dominant (but ill) Pete Sampras in the previous round. Since retiring as a player, Yzaga has served as captain of Peru's Davis Cup team.

Nació el 23 de octubre de 1967 en Lima. Ha sido uno de los grandes del tenis, habiendo ocupado el puesto 18 en el ranking ATP individual.: 18 (al 30 de octubre de 1989). Su mejor ranking en dobles fue 54 (al 20 de octubre de 1989).

Ostenta el record peruano de participaciones en Copa Davis. Participó en 26 en encuentros, entre 1984 y 1997, jugando un total de 68 partidos individuales y dobles. En su brillante carrera deportiva, ganó una colección de títulos internacionales desde las categorías menores hasta la categoría profesional. En 1985 saltó al primer plano del tenis mundial al consagrarse campeón junior del Roland Garros y campeón de dobles en Wimbledon.

Luego conquistó importantes torneos ATP, tales como: Itaparica, Charlotte, Tampa, Sydney Indoor, entre otros, y se mantuvo por varios años como el mejor tenista rankeado de Latinoamérica, Participó en el Grand Slam de Munich.

En su record, figura haber ganado a connotadas figuras, tales como: Pete Sampras, en el US Open 1994, cuando Sampras era el número uno del mundo. Asimismo, derrotó a Stefan Edberg, Thomas Muster, Michael Chang, Marcelo Ríos y otros. Fue bicampeón nacional 1987 - 1988.

En el año 2004 fue designado por primera vez capitán del equipo peruano, que derrotó categóricamente de visitante a Brasil por 4-1, defendiendo su permanencia en el Grupo I de la Zona Americana.
