James Franklin Murphy (July 30th, 1967, Portsmouth, Virginia USA) is an American guitarist. He is well-known for his work in Testament and his solo contributions to various bands as well as works released under his own name and by a band he founded named Disincarnate. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2001, but has recovered. Currently he is working on a tribute album to Chuck Schuldiner who died from a brain tumour.

In addition to playing guitar, Murphy operates a recording studio, Sound Temple Studio, where he has mixed and produced albums for other bands. Murphy has also contributed lessons to Guitar Player magazine.

Murphy's recordings over the years exhibit a wide diversity of playing techniques and sounds. However several themes are recognizable in many of his works. His solos often feature:

  • fast, articulated runs with a pronounced pick attack
  • long, fluid legato sections
  • harmonized leads

Furthermore he performed as a touring guitarist for Agent Steel and he played in Hallows Eve in 1988.
