Jan-Michael Charles Gambill, who was born on June 3, 1977 in Spokane, Washington, USA, has been a professional American tennis player since 1996. He's best known for his unusual double-handed forehand. At just 5 years old, Gambill began playing tennis, looking up to tennis stars Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe. He currently lives in Hawaii. Jan-Michael Gambill is coached by his father Chuck Gambill, who also coaches Jan-Michael's younger brother Torrey Gambill.
As of 2006, Gambill's career prize money totalled approximately $3.58 million. His Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranking in August, 2004 was 80, while his highest ranking was World No. 14 in June, 2001. Gambill has earned three career titles for singles and five titles for doubles.
Gambill has played in 32 Grand Slams as a singles player and 19 as a doubles player. He is 6 feet 3 inches tall (1.90 m) and weighs 200 pounds (91 kg) and is right-handed and plays double-handed both on the forehand and the backhand side. He was sponsored by Adidas apparel company through 2004 and is now sponsored by Prince.
Known for his good looks and his hot temper, Gambill often turns his seat away from his opponents during matches. He has beaten, among others, tennis greats Roger Federer, Carlos Moya, Mark Philippoussis, Lleyton Hewitt, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi.
