Jay Schellen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jay Schellen (born 20 May 1960, Albuquerque, New Mexico) is a drummer who has worked with a number of heavy rock and progressive rock bands, including with several members of Yes.

Early work included a stint in 1982 with Badfinger. He was invited to join the band by former Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye. In 1984, Schellen played live in former Yes guitarist Peter Banks' band.

In 1986, Schellen joined Stone Fury, working with guitarist Bruce Gowdy. From 1986 to 1992, he was in Hurricane. In 1993, Schellen joined Gowdy in a new project, Unruly Child, and, in 1995, Schellen again worked with Gowdy, joining World Trade for their second album Euphoria, along side Billy Sherwood (later in Yes). Schellen and Sherwood were the only members of World Trade for appearances on two tribute albums released on the Magna Carta record label in 1995.

In 1995-7, Schellen was in Sircle of Silence. In 1998, he played in Heaven and Earth with former Hurricane bandmate Kelly Hansen. 1998/9 saw a second Unruly Child album with Gowdy and Hansen. In 1999, Schellen played on Sherwood's debut solo album The Big Peace, while the next year he recorded for Sherwood's project with Yes bassist Chris Squire, Conspiracy. In 2003, Schellen re-joined Conspiracy. They recorded a live-in-the-studio DVD in 2004, released in 2006. Schellen has continued to work with Sherwood on a number of other projects.

Meanwhile, Schellen and Sherwood worked on demos for Asia's 2004 album Silent Nation with Geoff Downes (another former Yes keyboardist). In August 2005, Schellen replaced Chris Slade as drummer in Asia. However, in February 2006, Downes left the group: Schellen and the other two Asia band members (John Payne, Guthrie Govan) formed a new band, GPS.

In 1997, Schellen published his drum method book Rocking Independence.
