Jeff Merkley

Jeff Merkley is the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives. Merkley, a Democrat, represents House District 47, located in eastern Multnomah County within the Portland city limits.
Merkley grew up within the boundaries of his district, graduating from David Douglas High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a Master of Public Policy degree from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University.[1]
Merkley returned to Portland in 1991 and served as executive director of Portland Habitat for Humanity. He was first elected to the Oregon House in 1998 and was elected Democratic leader after the 2003 legislative session.
In the 2006 Oregon statewide elections, Democrats gained a majority in the Oregon House, and Merkley was chosen (in a unanimous vote of the 31 incoming Democrats) to serve as Speaker in the next legislative session.[1]
Merkley and his wife, Mary Sorteberg, have two children, Jonathan and Brynne.
