Joel Gertner started out as a ring announcer in ECW, but thanks to Shane Douglas, Gertner became a heel and started taunting or making fun of the 'good guy' wrestlers during their introduction to or in the ring. Most wrestlers usually made Gertner pay for his insults. He was turned into a color commentator by Taz and Bill Alfonso to counter-balance the influence of announcer Joey Styles, who they regarded as being biased against them. During this time, Gertner would become popular with the fans for his introductions which would consist of limericks containing multiple sexual innuendos.

Gertner later became the manager & ring announcer for the Dudley Boyz. He had to wear his now-infamous neck brace when he has hit by the move, 'Total Elimination' (Calf Kick & Sweep) by Perry Saturn & John Kronus (The Eliminators) at ECW Barely Legal in 1997, and has been wearing it ever since. Despite the 'injury', Joel led the Dudley Boyz to 8 ECW Tag Team Title reigns until they left for the WWF. Joel then became a broadcaster on ECW on TNN along with Joey Styles, leading to a feud with broadcaster/manager/wrestler and "Network" representative Cyrus "The Virus". They fought each other in a match at ECW Anarchy Rulz 2000 in which Gertner came out victorious.

Joel went to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling on June 26, 2002 to introduce a new tag team, 'The Rainbow Express.' Joel left TNA shortly after this. He was also a part of ECW One Night Stand 2005 (during which, in the course of an interview, he literally begged Eric Bischoff for a job) and Hardcore Homecoming. Both times, he came out as a surprise with his "Well, well, well!" opening.

On August 4th, 2006 Gertner made a 'surprise' appearance at the Kaiju Big Battel All Out War event in New York. Circumstance forced Louden Noxious, the regular Kaiju ring announcer, to fight a match against Call Me Kevin. Gertner took over as ring announcer during the match.

Gertner is currently the promoter for Connecticut's MXW Pro Wrestling independent organization.

  • "Before I was so rudely interrupted..."
  • "Well, well, well!"
  • "You can't say 'shit' on television! What the fuck is wrong with you?" (bleeped, said after Joey Styles says 'Holy Shit' (also bleeped) on the defunct ECW on TNN show.)
