The school was established in 1924 as John Burroughs Junior High School. The Junior High in the schools name was replaced with Middle at the beginning of the 1994-1995 school year to coincide with the school district's policy of placing 6th graders in Middle Schools, and 9th Graders as freshmen in High School. This was to ease overcrowding at many elementary schools.
The school contains over 2,200 students
