John Shimmin BEd MHK is currently the Minister of Local Government and the Environment of the Isle of Man Government. On 31 July 2006 he announced he would be standing for Chief Minister of the Isle of Man after the 2006 General Election. He failed to gain the nomination by Tynwald however and was demoted to DLGE Minister by Chief Minister Tony Brown in November 2006.

John Shimmin was born in Douglas in 1960 and educated at St Ninian's High School and the Worcester College of Higher Education. He was then a teacher from 1982 until entering politics in 1996. He was elected as MHK for Douglas West in 1996 at his first attempt. In 1999 he became Chairman of the Isle of Man Post Office before becoming Minister of Transport in 2002. In 2005 he swapped Departments with the Minister of Home Affairs Phil Braidwood, after the latter was moved due to increasing political pressure relating to the Cheshire Constabulary investigation and had been found to have breached the Council of Minister's Act. In November 2006 he was re-elected into Tynwald, coming second place after newcomer Geoff Corkish. John then stood for the position of Chief Minister, but was succeeded by Tony Brown. Now, he is the Minister of Local Government and the Environment.
