John Shuter (9 February 18555 July 1920) was a cricketer who played for England and Surrey in the late 19th century.

Shuter was born in Thornton Heath, Surrey, England, the son of Leonard Shuter, a stave timber merchant, and Caroline. John went to Winchester School, playing in its cricket eleven from 1871 to 1873. After a single match for Kent, his next first-class game was for Surrey in 1877, and it is there that he excelled, playing 274 games for them. He won his Surrey cap in 1884 and captained the county between 1880 and 1893, and first led Surrey to the County Championship in 1887. They then came first in 1888, tied with Lancashire and Nottinghamshire in 1889, and won again in 1890, 1891 and 1892.

Long after he retired he was appointed as a Test selector (for the triangular tournament held in 1912) and secretary of Surrey in 1919. Shuter played in only one Test match at his home ground of the Oval in 1888. Although most noted for his cricketing exploits, Shuter joined his father in business as a stave timber merchant and cooper.

Shuter died in Blackheath, London, England.
