John Truby

John Truby is a screenwriter, director and screenwriting teacher. He is best known for the screenwriting software program Blockbuster (orig. Writing a Blockbuster). His first feature film as writer/director was All American Boy.
Truby argues that most teachers of screenwriting emphasize inner transformation of the characters but not the moral effect their actions have on others. He is critical of Syd Field's three-act “Paradigm” and has instead crafted his own 22-step outline.
His “Blockbuster” software program enables screenwriters to write their screenplays following his 22-step outline, with separate windows to focus on characters, theme and plot development. Because Truby believes that each film genre is different and must be mastered separately, the software has an additional 13 “add-ons” that are purchased separately or as part of a diploma package.
